CCC grad ceremonies are June 15 and 16

OREGON CITY – Clackamas Community College will celebrate its 2017 graduates in two ceremonies in June.

On Thursday, June 15, students earning Adult High School diplomas and General Educational Development (GED) certificates will graduate. Students earning certificates and degrees will graduate on Friday, June 16.

This year, CCC is awarding 229 GEDs. The youngest graduate is 17 and the oldest is 51. Twenty-one students are receiving the Adult High School Diploma, with the youngest being 15 and the oldest 29. The college is awarding 1,938 degrees and certificates for the academic year. The youngest graduate is 16, and the oldest is 70 years old.

Each year the college recognizes students who have been nominated by their instructors for their accomplishments, along with former students and supporters in the community. This year’s honorees include:

  • Dan “Dodge” Yates (Molalla) dropped out of school in the 11th grade, but with the help of Workforce he has overcome several learning obstacles to earn his GED. He has secured a working apprenticeship in a local automotive repair shop and plans on learning to be a mechanic.
  • Okehmos Olsen (Colton) is a leader of the college’s STEM Club, which is now the largest organization of its kind by membership on campus. He has overcome financial obstacles by taking advantage of CCC Foundation scholarships. He is transferring to Oregon State University to pursue a degree in civil engineering.
  • Lama Isse (Damascus, Syria) is earning her associate’s degree after learning English, all while working full time, raising her son and studying to become a U.S. citizen. She has used her degree to find a job with a local company.
  • Cindi Coleman (Portland) dropped out of high school at age 14 and returned to school after 30 years to earn both her GED and her associate’s degree. She plans to use her degree to continue working with children.
  • Jay Hernandez (Mulino) is a Marine veteran and is graduating with an associate’s degree in business. He is transferring to Marylhurst University where he plans to continue his focus on business.
  • Adam Cnossen (Canby) and Liana Tribunskaya (Portland) are this year’s All-Oregon Academic Team. Cnossen has returned to college after 25 years and is pursuing a degree in psychology. Tribunskaya is a first-generation college student and is majoring in business administration.
  • Alice and Mike Norris will be honored as distinguished friends of the college. They are honored for their many contributions to the college.

Both graduation ceremonies will take place at 7 p.m. on the Oregon City Campus, 19600 Molalla Ave. Tickets were distributed for the degree and certificate ceremony. Additional seating and live streaming of the June 16 ceremony will be available on screens in the McLoughlin Auditorium, Osterman Theatre and Gregory Forum.
